Orthodontic wax can help to make your braces treatment more comfortable. Here's a little from our BC orthodontists about this helpful orthodontic product.
What is orthodontic wax?
Orthodontic wax helps to protect the inside of your mouth (cheeks and gums) from the friction caused by your braces. It's typically made of natural waxes such as beeswax, paraffin wax or carnauba wax.
How does orthodontic wax work?
Once put in place, orthodontic wax covers sharp edges and helps to stabilize any loose pieces of wire or bracket, making your braces feel more comfortable in your mouth.
You will likely apply orthodontic wax more often when you first get your braces, while your mouth is getting used to the brackets and wires. You might also apply orthodontic wax more frequently right after your braces have been adjusted.
How do I apply orthodontic wax?
To apply orthodontic wax, begin by washing your hands thoroughly and cleaning your teeth. Then take a small piece of orthodontic wax and roll it into a ball. Carefully place the wax onto the bracket or wire that is causing the discomfort, and push the wax into place. If you have done it correctly, the orthodontic wax will form a small bump over the bracket or wire that was causing the issue. The wax should help to prevent any further discomfort.
Is orthodontic wax safe to swallow?
Yes! Orthodontic wax is safe to swallow. It's non-toxic, safe to consume, and is actually meant to be swallowed. After you place the wax, your saliva will gradually cause the orthodontic wax to wear away by itself.
What does orthodontic wax taste like?
Generally, orthodontic wax is naturally flavourless. That said, some varieties have added flavouring such as grape or mint.
Where can I get orthodontic wax?
Chances are that your orthodontist will provide you with orthodontic wax when you visit for your adjustments, but you can purchase it at most pharmacies.
Will the orthodontic wax be noticeable to others when I talk or smile?
Orthodontic wax is pretty difficult to spot since it's clear. Unless they look closely, most people won't notice you're using it.
