Caring for Your Teeth After Braces

We know how exciting it is for our patients when their braces finally come off – we're excited too! But now the work of maintaining your straight new smile begins. Here's what to do.

The braces removal process is usually over in no time. Your orthodontist will gently remove the braces, as well as any remaining bonding cement.

Our BC orthodontists all agree: we get nearly as excited about this process as our patients do! For one thing, it's very satisfying seeing the outcome of the previous months (or years) of treatment. But most of all, we really love seeing our patients’ happy faces when they see their straight new smiles unobstructed for the first time!

Once the braces are finally off, the maintenance portion of treatment begins. There are several different elements to maintaining your new smile after your braces are gone, including the following:

Retainers

You’ll have to wear a retainer either full time or part time for about a year after your orthodontic treatment is complete, and intermittently thereafter. This part of treatment is of equal importance to your braces, as it gives your teeth a chance to settle into their new positions, and become firmly set in place. If you don’t wear your retainer as prescribed, you risk your teeth shifting and becoming misaligned again.

Regular Dental Check Ups

Going to the dentist on a regular basis is one of the most important parts of a good oral hygiene routine, whether you've had braces or not! Following your orthodontic treatment, continue to see your dentist on a regular basis, and visit your orthodontist regularly too. This allows us to monitor your smile and make sure that your excellent results are maintained.

Good Oral Hygiene

During your orthodontic treatment, you likely established a fairly rigorous oral hygiene routine. After braces, it would be in your best interest to maintain it! You won’t have to spend all that additional time cleaning the braces themselves, of course, but the thorough habits your developed when you had your braces should continue now to maintain your healthy smile.

Whitening

Many patients notice a difference in the colour of their teeth in the spots where their brackets were attached. You can even out the colour by undergoing a course of teeth whitening.
